Per POALH Rules and Regulations under ‘Environmental Protection’ — All wells and septic systems shall comply with applicable laws and regulations.
As lake property owners it is your duty to help preserve and protect the lake’s quality by hiring a professional to perform regular maintenance and clean out of your septic system. Typically septic tanks should be pumped out and inspected every 3 to 5 years, but larger households and year-round owners may need to be every 2 to 3 years. The septic company will typically recommend the frequency for your tank as part of their pump out service.
The Chatham Health District, which serves East Haddam and other surrounding towns, requires property owners to have their septic pumped out at least every 5 years. A local licensed septic company will file the Permit to Discharge with the Health District for your property to keep you compliant.
